Fri Feb 3

Sect 1/2
Today in class: returned quiz; discussed writing a value that is "out of 100" as a fraction, decimal, or percent.
We can express an amount out of 100 three ways - as a fraction over 100; as a decimal in the hundredths place; or with a percent sign. We reviewed the front of yesterday's worksheet (friendly ratios since denominator is a factor of 100). When the denominator is not friendly, divide to get a decimal, then decimal slide to write as a percent.

Homework: complete the back of the worksheet. This is due Tuesday because of our special Monday schedule. Those students who were in class finished during class. Casady athletes - please see me MONDAY (do not wait until class on Tuesday) if you are having troubles with it.

Sect 3/4/5
We reviewed the fraction re-quiz in detail. In sections 3 and 5 we also reviewed parts of the Ratio guided notes handout. The first two sides (not the third proportion page) are due Monday for sections 3/5 and Tuesday for section 4. Section 4 students who missed class today should see me MONDAY to get any questions answered. Do not wait until class on Tuesday.

Thurs Feb 2

Sect 1/2:
In class today: ratio/proportion quiz

Homework: FRONT ONLY of 6.1 worksheet on percents.
NOTE: This is due for BOTH section 1 and 2 tomorrow.
If you are in Sect. 1 and are an athlete going to Casady, you will need to show me your work tomorrow before you leave.

Sect 3/4/5:
In class today: fraction re-quiz

Homework: Complete guided notes; due Monday for Sect. 3/5 and Tues for Sect 4.

NOTE: Monday's schedule is different.
Sect 3/5 will have math - long blocks - that day.
Sect 1/2/4 will have math Tuesday but not Monday.
All sections meet Wednesday.

Tues/Wed Jan 31-Feb 1

In all sections we did a short online investigation relating scale factors, perimeter, area.
We looked at all the cool scale models and voted for our favorite project in several different categories.

Sect 1/2:
Section 2 continues to have difficulties completing assignments thoroughly/on-time. It's not everyone, but when half the students in class routinely fail to keep up with their responsibilities it can have a negative impact on the entire group.

Homework:
Prepare for a short Ch. 5 quiz on Thursday. You have resources in your binder from all the work we have completed on ratios/rates/proportions. (Guided notes; 5.1/5.3 packets) A great way to prepare is to select a few problems from each lesson from the Ch. 5 review - pages 266 & 267.

Also, preview/review section 6.1 "understanding percents". Read pg. 274-275 actively. Engage with examples. Complete quick check problems 1-4.

Sect 3/4/5:
Fraction re-quiz in class Thursday. (Students earning 90% or above on the take-home quiz will not take the re-quiz.) Class time Tues/Wed was spent reviewing the last practice sheet and answering any questions.

We are beginning Ch. 6 - ratios/proportions/percents.
Homework: Please preview/review (ratios/rates/unit rates) by actively reading text pg. 284. Complete 6.1 worksheet.

Mon Jan 30

Scale model construction finished today! Great, proportional, creative results!
Now, the cleanup begins... and may never end.... :)

Homework for all classes:
Project reflection questions (side 1) sheet due either Tuesday (sect 1, 2, 4) or Wednesday (sect 3,5)
ALSO all classes:
see last blog post for other work due when you have class next.

Here's a link to a copy of the reflection questions:

Download file "scale model project reflection.doc"

Fri Jan 27

Model construction (with lots of messy stuff...) continues today. Last working day will be Monday.

Sect 1/2:
Due Tuesday:
Re-work incorrect textbook problems on separate sheet of paper. Your 5.1/5.3 packet and textbooks are good resources. Please link to the lesson explanation posted after Jan. 18th on this blog for an explanation of similar triangles. Please make sure your solutions do not show just one number - find the corresponding sides, set up a proportion, and then solve the proportion with cross products or mental math.
Note: pg. 254 problem 11 has 3 guided steps. First, use proportions to find the length of the shorter side; second, find the area (you know how to find the area of a rectangle!!) in sq. inches; third, calculate the total cost given the $.60 per square inch cost.

Sect 3/4/5:
Due Tuesday or Wednesday:
Fraction practice sheet - except for those students with a 90% or above on the take-home quiz. After the project is complete, will revisit some of the problem areas with fractions. We will have an in-class re-quiz - probably next Thursday.

Thurs Jan 26

Model construction day in all classes. Make sure you have measurement calculations completed for all objects in your scene.

Tues / Wed Jan 24-25

In all sections-
we continued with our scale project today; most of us finished scale models of ourselves. Next up - creating our scenes.

Sect 1/2
Homework: vocabulary practice sheet - due Thursday.

Sect 3/4/5
Thank you for handing in your take-home quiz on time this morning.
Homework: Cumulative review sheet. Note: #13 is a bit different that repeating decimal patterns we discussed in class.
I will post a short video link explaining this problem. Feel free to skip it until I do.
NOTE: I did not get the link to work - we'll discuss how to do #13 tomorrow.

Mon. Jan 23

We are working in both sections on a scale model project this week.

Sect 1/2
Proportion problems from text:
Text pg. 254 #6-12
Text pg. 257 #1-9

Sect 3/4/5
Take home quiz. Follow directions. Due Tues (tomorrow) morning 8am, no matter which section you are in.
You are on your honor to follow instructions for the take-home quiz. The instructions are printed on the top of the quiz sheet.
They are reprinted here:

NO CALCULATORS. YOU MAY USE YOUR OWN RESOURCES. YOU MAY NOT USE OTHER ONLINE HELP.

NO ASSISTANCE FROM ANOTHER PERSON, EVEN FOR CHECKING.

Fri Jan 20

Sect 1/2
Today in class we did two activities applying proportions - map scales and indirect measurement.
Well, the sun did not cooperate today, so the indirect measurement activity will have to wait.
Homework: complete map scale activity sheet if you did not finish during class. Make sure to answer every question.
Also, I will be collecting our previous (back 5.1/5.3) homework assignment for a grade. Students could hand it in today for a couple extra points.

Sect 3/4/5
Today in class we worked on problem solving with fractions.
We also worked on a quiz practice sheet for a fraction assessment.
We will have a take-home quiz for this unit. Students will be given the quiz for homework on Monday afternoon. It will be due for ALL classes (even if you don't have math Tuesday) first thing Tuesday morning. Students will be given specific instructions on the types of resources that are permitted for the take-home quiz.
Homework: complete quiz practice we worked on in class.
