I am out attending my daughter's graduation!
During class Thursday and Friday, you will be working on review problems from the textbook.
Work at your own pace independently; use class time effectively, please. Use text/notes as resources. Take initiative to figure out ideas giving you trouble. These skills are all ones we have learned. The assignments are NOT homework.

HOMEWORK: Please follow directions on the project reflection sheet handed out during class today. Your google doc is due Friday morning at 8:00 am.
Here is a link to the reflection assignment sheet.

Download file "DTS Sketchup Reflection.doc"

NO homework over the weekend.
Wonder what percent of the school year is over? Can you calculate it?

Tues/Wed May 8-9

Today in class we went to the lab and did a sketchup activity with solid figures.
I copied students' sketchup files from their flash drives, and I am organizing presentations by downtown district.

There are two parts to the homework. All homework is due Thursday May 10.

First is a textbook review as we begin to prepare for finals.
Directions for textbook assignment:
Complete the problems neatly on notebook paper or in your spiral.
You CANNOT just write the letter of the answer.
you MUST show your thinking and demonstrate how you arrived at your solution.
This work will be handed in Thursday.

Second, you are to write minimum of 3 complete sentences describing your sketchup project. These sentences will be what you will say as you present your animated sketchup project file. Copy and paste these questions into a google document; then answer them.
Name your document like this and share it with me: sect#_lastname_sketchup. For example: Sect1_Matthews_sketchup

1.) What is shown in your model?
2.) Why did you chose to model this part of your DTS district - what is its relevance?
3.) What are one or two interesting things about your model?

This is due Thursday by 8am.

Monday May 7

In class today, we discussed attributes and classified 3D shapes.
We will be in the lab tomorrow constructing these shapes in sketchup, and also making 2D nets.

We discussed our plan for presenting sketchup projects - details to follow, but it's looking as though it will be next Wed. 5/16.
Each student will receive a reflection/presentation guideline sheet.

HOMEWORK: Complete 3D worksheets we started in class.
Write down the file size of your sketchup project.
Bring your flash drive to long block class Tues. or Wed.

Thurs May 3

We are finishing/animating our sketchup models!
Optional - computer lab session today after school until 4:30.

Today is the last class day dedicated to modeling. We will be putting together our presentations next week.
Also next week we will visit sketchup one more time to model and explore the geometric properties of 3D solids, our last mini-unit.

Not far ahead - finals!
Our final assessment is two parts - first, our sketchup DTS model; second, a "traditional" final exam.
Stay tuned for more info!

Tues/Wed May 1-2

Sketchup! Students are beginning to finish!!! Thursday is it!
Next step - animate your project. We will put together one file per downtown district.
Keep working - the projects are fantastic!

I plan on being in the lab during study halls whenever possible. We will also have an optional session in the lab this Thursday after school from 3:30-4:30.

To those of you finding that you need to pay better attention to dimensions and watch this video about how to resize geometry you have already drawn. Watch this!

Here's a good video about the relationship between edges and faces.
http://www.aidanchopra.com/web-content/chapter-2/understanding-the-relationship-between-faces-and-edges

Here's one that discusses creating scenes/animating. As you get to this stage in the process, please do not export to a quicktime video. It takes a long time - if we decide to go this route for our final presentations, we will do this part at school.
However, you can create and animate your scenes and save as part of sketchup file.

Monday April 30

We continue making progress on our 3D models.
Casady athletes missing class this afternoon came to work in the lab during study hall.
Homework: watch the two videos highlighted in the entry below.
Engage in your project at least 30 minutes each night.

Fri April 27

Update: These two videos from the "dummies" series are well worth watching.
From Ch 2, about the 3 axes:
http://www.aidanchopra.com/web-content/chapter-2/giving-instructions-with-the-drawing-axes

From Ch 4, about pulling in pre-made components:
http://www.aidanchopra.com/web-content/chapter-4/using-sketchup-s-handy-dandy-components

Students returned their yellow reflection sheets this morning before leaving for downtown.
Homework: spend at least 30 minutes, preferably 60 minutes, on your sketchup project.
How?
-learn: watch and re-watch tutorial videos that will help you figure out a part of your project. Take notes so you can apply what you learned to your project.
-research: find any additional information you may need for your project
-apply: if you have downloaded sketchup, spend some time working on your project.

We are planning to complete our time in the lab next Thursday. If you have started over many times or have not been keeping up with your responsibilities by engaging with your project at home, you may have trouble finishing.

Thurs April 26

NOTE: About working in the lab on sketchup during study hall:
There are some days I will be able to be in the lab during study hall, but not every day. IF Ms. Townsley is in the lab without a class, you can work during study hall if your advisor gives permission. If Ms. Townsley is not there, the lab will locked and you cannot work during that time.

Homework #1: Today in the lab I met with students individually to assess progress on their sketchup projects.
Each student was given a yellow assessment checklist.
On the bottom, there is a place for a minimum 3-sentence student reflection.
This reflection is homework tonight. It is due tomorrow (Friday). I will collect it in the library before we leave for DTS.
No students missed class today, so each student has a yellow sheet.

Homework #2: Please watch this video from the "dummies" series Ch. 5 about making groups/components.
http://www.aidanchopra.com/web-content/chapter-5/grouping-things-together

Tues/Wed April 24-25

3D modeling...sketchup projects
Please engage in your project at least 30 minutes each night. You will get behind and find it difficult to finish a quality product if you don't. Use this time to find information, watch training videos, and search for help you need.
It is expected that you come to the lab each day with your materials ready to work on sketchup. After Thursday you will not be able to bring your devices to the lab, so make sure any photos you took are accessible online.
We watched Sketchup K-12 videos 3.2 and 4 in class.

HOMEWORK:
1.) The link to my youtube channel is on my math HW page. On my youtube channel, please watch Sketchup K-12 Video #5.
Write down at least 3 bullet points telling what the video explains or what you learned.
2.) Be prepared to meet with me Thursday briefly during class. I will assess your project sheet and the progress you are making.

Latin students missing Wednesday's class were to meet in the lab during study hall Tuesday, and are responsible for the above homework. Please watch Sketchup videos 3.2 and 4 if you did not on Tuesday.

Mon. April 23

We are working on our Tulsa Sketchup models. Please be certain to use your class time wisely to get the most of our time in the lab. Each day we are in the lab, you should bring your project sheet, flash drive, and any other resources. If you have photos on a device, you should email them to yourself so you can access them from the lab. (NOTE: You are NOT to share flash drives with another student.)

HOMEWORK: ENGAGE in your project for at least 30 minutes at home; more if you have time. This means learning more sketchup skills, researching your history sources, or finding good photos. Some people have sketchup at home, but this is not required.
If you are in Section 3/5 and missing class Wednesday for Latin, please meet in the lab during Study Hall 12:30-1:00 Tuesday to get some work time in.

HOMEWORK 2: Please make sure your gradesheet is updated completely (including formulas). Follow the printout I handed out today.

Fri. April 20

Grade Sheet updates are due. Please take care of your responsibilities. In my view, we have been learning how spreadsheets work most of the year. We were entirely guided the first trimester, less so the second trimester, and now I feel as though it is reasonable to assign a grade sheet update as homework. I even list all assignments with points possible on my blog. It is not an excuse not to be able to find what your score was on an assignment. You can input all other information, leave your score blank, ask me what your score for that specific assignment was, and then go back and fill it in.
As I have tried to communicate numerous times, the primary objective is to learn to use spreadsheets. It's a valuable, important skill that you are capable of mastering. Not only are spreadsheets essential when doing analysis in science and social science, understanding how they work strengthens algebraic thinking. The secondary objective is to keep track of and communicate your performance in this class.

All students received a sketchup project information sheet and were instructed to use time downtown today to sharpen thinking about their projects. By Monday, all students are expected to have the sheet filled out and have a preliminary sketch of their ideas so we can get started. We will spend next week and the week of April 30 in the lab, and should be finished by Thurs. May 3.

Here is a link to that information sheet.

Download file "dts sketchup info.doc"

Thurs. April 19

Grade Sheet Updates are due.

More sketchup modeling today.
Tomorrow students will get a project information sheet with guidelines and options.
Monday we start modeling downtown Tulsa!

We are so hi-tech!!

Wed. April 18

Sketchup project continues in both classes... As I stated in class, your goal is to have at least two "mini-projects" completed by Thursday. You are also to be thinking, engaging, and connecting the skills you are developing to your downtown study project.

Mon/Tues April 16-17

Google Sketchup! Our downtown 3D modeling extravaganza has begun!
All students will start on these two long-block days.
The project is self-paced, as we model by following along with the excellent tutorial videos. The link on my main page the place to go for all the training videos you need. Use it!!! The objective for this week is to LEARN all you can, at your own pace, about how the program works. I expect you will have at least one, but probably more, mini-projects by week's end. As you are discovering and engaging with the software, you should be thinking about your section of downtown and potential project ideas, so that we are ready to begin our actual project by next week. Please make sure you use this week to learn all you can, since it will help as you construct your downtown 3D model.

FLASH DRIVE! Each student will need a flash drive for this project. Make sure your flash drive is sturdy and reliable.
HOMEWORK: Get your own flash drive if you don't have one. Seriously. This will be graded.
ALSO, you will need to update your grade sheets by Friday. (after tests are returned by Wed.) If you have not followed through with yours this trimester, you may want to get started.

All students are invited to practice with sketchup at home with the tutorial videos. If you would like to download the software, it's free. Students, check with your parents first before doing this. Also, this is totally optional. Seriously.

Other business:
Section 1/2: Students' tests will be returned tomorrow.
Sect 3/4/5: The deadline for handing in the take-home test and Thursday's homework was 8:00 am today.

Take-home test note

On question #7, the coordinates graphed are whole numbers. It may not look like it, but they are!

Fri April 13

We had a great presentation about google sketchup this morning before leaving for downtown. We will start in the computer lab next week! Start thinking about your model, get excited about the possibilities, and be prepared to invest lots of effort and learn cool new things!
Sect 1/2
Track athletes made up the test this afternoon. No homework.

Sect 3/4/5
Students all received the take-home test. To repeat the expectations - you may use you notes, handouts, assignments. You may not use the book. You may not use help from another person or from an online source.

Especially for track athletes who missed class Thursday:
Here is an example of solving for y that involves two steps. (#9 from Thursday's Slope Skills worksheet.)
Why is it good to solve for y? To put the equation into slope-intercept form! And why is that useful? (You can answer that one..)
Here goes:
Solve 2x+2y=4 for y.
Subtract 2x from both sides gives 2y = -2x + 4
Then divide each side by 2. Remember you must divide each term on the right by 2. (equality properties..)
So now we have y = -2/2 x + 4/2
which is y = -x + 2
and now it's in slope-intercept form!
