Days 9 and 10 - The Great Wall and Tiananmen Square

(pictures at http://tinyurl.com/hhchina2011 and scroll to Day 9 and then Day 10)

Cameron- Monday we left for the Great wall and the weather there was freezing and there was a lot of wind. We all walked to a view point then a few of us decided to walk to the Eighth tower of the north. That tower didn't seem far but the actual walk was steep and long. Eryn, Mr. Finch, and I made it to the Eighth Tower then walked all the way back, which was a lot quicker than walking up. Eryn and I bought a rice pickets hat and decided to wear them home.
Yesterday we visited Tiananmen Square and went shopping after that. We didn't get to see Mao in his coffin so the visit to tian amen square was cool but there needed to be more. Oh well. We shopped for like 5 hours and then went to the spa to make our appointment for a massage. Then we went back to the school and I played basketball till Tom and I had to leave. Tom and I went to Pizza Hut for dinner then walked to Dairy Queen for a Blizzard. The time here in Beijing has gone by fast and I can't believe we have to leave tomorrow morning!

Eryn-we went to the great wall of china Monday and it was awesome.finch,Cameron and I walked all the way up to the top of the eighth tower.it was cold and windy but I felt like i accomplished something haha Tuesday we went to tianan men square and it was cool to be there and experience a famous spot that everyone knows about. After that we went shopping at a huge market street. It had a lot of different things ranging from cheap to really expensive. This entire trip has made me exhausted and thankful.the more I stay here and live with a typical chines family, I want to be home to my friends and family.I miss my car..taking the bus ISN'T fun. Anyways today is out last day here and I can't wait till we go to the spa!! And yes...cameron is going with us :)

Farley - On monday we went to the great wall. It was so windy and the wall was incredibly steep but it was amazing! They say one is not a true man until he has climbed the great wall and I think there's some truth to that because it is quite a hike! I really liked it though; it was incredible! Yesterday we went to tiananmen square, which was cool but not overly exciting. And I was kind of mad that we didn't get to go see mao's grave though. After, we went shopping. Today is our last day in Beijing and to celebrate we are going shopping and to a spa for massages!

Amanda- On Monday we went to the Great Wall. It was really nice but extremely cold. The view was amazing but to get up their it was, let's just say very interesting lol. On the way down we saw, what we thought was a super model but it ended up like a superstar dude, with hair like Hannah Montana! We got pictures with him don't worry. On Tuesday we went to tiananmen square. It was nice but it wasn't exactly what I thought it would be. We went shopping some more and I got a lot of painted scrolls for a good price lol!

The Weekend - What you've missed

OK - here's all the stuff you need to know to catch up....
(pictures at http://tinyurl.com/hhchina2011 and scroll to What You've Missed)

Farley - We spent the weekend with our families and I had a great time with my hosts! We went all over the city. We went shopping, saw Beijing's best universities, saw the Beijing acrobats and went to the Olympic park. It was really cool to see the bird's nest and the water cube. They're a lot smaller than I imagined though. We went out to eat a lot and tried lots of traditional dishes which were really good but some of them were really weird! I really enjoyed learning more about Chinese culture and seeing Beijing as the natives do but being back with the group is nice.

Cameron- This weekend I spent time with my family and Tom's friends as well. Saturday Tom and I went to the TV tower which was closed, walked around a park nearby, then met up with his friends at this alley shopping area, had lunch there, then walked around the area and decided to go to the Beijing zoo. Once dinner came around we went to XiDan which is much like time square in New York. Had dinner there then went all went our separate ways for the night. Sunday my family and I went to the Beijing venues which was pretty cool. I got to go into the Bird's Nest and the Water Cube. After dinner that day Tom and I went and played basketball at a local court. I had a great time this weekend but it's nice to be back with my group. Papa and Grandma if your reading this I miss you guys and can't wait to see ya when I get back!

Eryn-
Thursday:well yesterday we went to the lama temple.it was a great experience because it was where people prayed for different things.they burned incense and did a weird ritual but it was cool to see their culture.I went out to eat with my family for the first time last night and we ate sooo much food.we couldnt finish all of it.the Chinese culture is to be really generous towards their guests.I tried the Beijing duck and it was amazing!!the only thing that creeped me out was the whole fish.I had to tell finch to spin the table because the fish was staring at me haha by the time I got home I could barely walk but I was welcomed back home by the Chinese Harry potter movie and more food! I think I'll be full for a few days.

Friday:today was ally of fun!we went to the summer palace.it was huge! It amazed me that one person could own all of that land.there was a bunch of High bridges and large lakes.I would have liked to see the palace during the summer.we walked sooo much today.when I come back to America I'm going to have huge muscles haha after we got back from the summer palace we were exhausted.we all took a nap in Boots room.after we woke up we went to the underground teen shopping mall and we ate at kfc! None of the sales people knew any English so it was an experience trying to communicate with them.it took about 45 mins just to tell the salesman that we needed a bigger size shoe.the kfc is kinda different but really similar to tulsas.the ketchup is weird though so far the sights have been amazing and I can't wait to see more.I'm nervous about the weekend because we won't see our group.so we get to spend some quality time with our families..

Saturday:ok well today I got to sleep in till around 10am.it was nice to finally get to sleep.I was informed that we were going to eat lunch with a bunch of the dads old hghschool friends.once we got there Michelle told me that they were speaking a different dialect so therefore she couldn't even understand them.it was interesting to say the least.then we headed to the olympic birds nest.it was huge!I stood near the field and I was in heaven.I could only imagine walking on te field during opening ceremony wheww it was exciting. After we left here we went to tour the two major universities in Beijing.it was cool to see the differences between American colleges and theirs.I have no idea what we are doing tomorrow but all I know is I'm exhausted and ready to be back in my own bed.

Sunday:yesterday I met some of micelles friends at a birthday party.their idea of a birthday party is to sit and talk in a small smoky cafe.it was interesting to seebhow they react with each other outside off school.after thatvwe went to the two major shopping centers.it was an old alley with a bunch of different shops and foods.I ATE A SCORPION! It was crazy. But overall it was a nice day of shopping and walking. We ate at a Korean restaurant and it was the best meal I've had haha we had a grill and we had to cook our own food. It was alot of fun. We are going to the great wall today and it's suppose to be really cold.so we will see how fun this is haha

Amanda- This weekend we spent time with our families. On Saturday Pure has an extra English class, so I went to her English class with her. After I went to a pizza place with Pure's mom for lunch. It was actually really good. After Pure got out of her class we went to a village market. I don't remember what it was called but it was strawberries on a stick an it had like a hard sugar glaze that was on the strawberries. That was some of the best strawberries I've ever had!! For dinner we went to a Russian restaurant. They had Russian performers, that was a lot of fun. On Sunday I got to catch up with my friend Clemence. I met her in France last year. After that Pure's mom and I when to a different bargaining market. That night Pure's mom taught Pure an I how to make dumplings. I took me about ten times before I got it right, but it was fun.

Day 5 - Thursday - Class and Lama Temple

See more pics at http://tinyurl.com/hhchina2011 and scroll down to Day 5.

Today was a slower day. We attended classes in the morning and ate lunch at school. In the afternoon, we traveled across town to the Lama Temple. We started by van but had to change to the subway because of the traffic. The Lama Temple is a Buddist Monastery that used to be the house of a prince. It was a busy place with many people coming to burn incense and pray. It was also in a much more compact area so we didn't have to walk around as much. People can come to pray any time the temple is open but many come on the 15th day after the lunar new year. There were many different buildings and rooms in which you could pray - each with a different Buddha or set of Buddhas. This evening was Eryn's family turn to host dinner. Again a traditional family style meal served in the round. More food than could possibly be eaten was ordered but we ate so much we all thought we would explode! It was nice to have a slower day with not as much walking. We've been so busy since we arrived!

Day 4 - Wednesday - Temple of Heaven and Shopping

See more pics at http://tinyurl.com/hhchina2011 and scroll down to Day 4.

Cameron- Today we went to the market to buy items and we went to the Temple of Heaven in the morning. The temple was really cool and there was one place called the echo wall. Mr. Finch and I were on opposite sides of the circle and we could here each other. Eryn and I stood on the Stone center of heaven which was pretty cool because when you stood on it your voice would echo. After that we had lunch then went to the market. The market was INSANE! On one level we were being pulled in one direction and the people that we were bargaining with would not let go. I bought some items from the market and it was good experience to bargain down prices and learn how to walk away. Overall I had a great time today and i hope we can go shopping again another time!

Eryn-well today we went to the temple of heaven and we experienced a lot of cool things. we danced with the exercise class and ate Chinese dumplings. it was very interesting to see the echo wall and the stone of heaven. we also went to a market. I was getting frustrated because everyone kept grabbing me and asking me to buy or look at their stuff. It was fun for a while but it soon got overwhelming. but overall I enjoyed it. I bought a bunch of pretty cool stuff. bargaining is easier than it sounds :)

Amanda- today we went to the Temple of Heaven. It was really fun to dance during a dancing class. One of the sites was an echo wall. You would stand on one side an another person would stand across the walkway. If you talk towards the wall the other person can hear you. We also went to the market for shopping. I love bargaining for things. I got a lot of nice things for good prices.

Farley- today was really cool. We went to the temple of heaven which was beautiful and spent the morning outside. Next we went to the market to try out hand at bargaining. The salespeople are really funny they yell and try to pull you into their booths. Sometimes it's really uncomfortable. We all turned out to be really good bargainers and bought lots of cool stuff to bring home. We had to take the subway (which is insanely crowded) everywhere we went today, but luckily it was less intimidating this time around. We had a lot of fun today and I am excited to see more tomorrow!

Finch- Today's trip was fun! More subway trips (which I enjoy for a number of reasons), the Temple of Heaven and the "flea market" shopping. I could spend all day there. So much to see and talk about with the vendors (some good and some just goofy). The students were great to watch and hear their stories about bargaining - especially Cameron who may have gotten the deal of the day. I bought a pair of "knock-off" shoes ($79 Adidas for $13.80 - uh, yeah, sure) just for the experience - it was SO FUNNY! They literally pulled on my jacket so I couldn't leave almost pulling me back to the ground, lowering their price with every step I took away from their booth. The morning at the Temple of Heaven was interesting but not as overwhelming as the Forbidden City. It was really curious to see many older people there. It is apparently a "hang-out" for retirees that come there to exercise, sell things or just visit with others. Kind of like a huge park that happens to contain important ancient culture stuff. Tonight, we went to meet Farley's family (Tracy, mother, and uncle - father was out of town on business), see their apartment and have dinner. Tracy, Farley's student, is very well spoken in English. The apartment was much smaller than I expected but was told bigger than most (and very expensive). We shared pictures and stories and went to eat. The meal was served in traditional Chinese family style with food in the middle on a lazy-susan that you spun around to get what you wanted. There was no lack of food let me tell you!

Dr. Boots-Marshall- Today, our teacher guide was Wendy. She took us to the Temple of Heaven and the Hongqiao Market. The Temple of Heaven was one of the 3 places in Beijing that the Emperor used on a regular basis. (The other 2 are the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace.) At this Temple, the Emperor would pray -- as the name suggests. He would visit 3 times a year, at the new year, the summer solistice, and the winder solistice; the prayers were mostly for good harvests. Now days, the Temple is a meeting place for Chinese elderly, who are retired. They gather in the park and line dance, partner dance, play cards, do tai chi, and (this was my favorite) meet up with other elderly folks whose children aren't married and try to fix them up. After the Temple, we went to the Hongqiao Market, a place that sells a crazy assortment of stuff: knockoff purses and shoes, pearls, sketchy electronics, and lots of traditional Chinese items, like carved jade, tea sets, scroll paintings. We all learned to bargin really, really well. For dinner, Henry and I went to Farley's host family's apartment. They took us to a restuarant -- the Youth Restaurant -- and treated us to an incredible feast. We had peppered beef, roast beef, Beijing duck, mustard greens, spinach with peanuts and mushrooms, fried rice, Kung Pao Chicken, ice cream, fruit, duck soup, crysanthemum tea. Fantastic.

AND FINALLY - a couple of HH's finest decided to show off their dance skills at the Temple of Heaven....

OK - this was really an exercise class for retired people. They had stuff like this going on everywhere on the grounds. Looks like everyone was enjoying themselves : )

Day 3 - Tuesday - Capital Museum and Forbidden City

for more pics go to http://tinyurl.com/hhchina2011

Amanda- Yesterday we went to the Capital Museum and the Forbidden City. Yesterday was also Women's Day so, us girls got half priced tickets. The Capital Museum was full of old artifacts. It was really nice. The Forbidden City was awesome. The colors and designs of the buildings was really interesting. We got a lot of cool pictures. On the way home we took a subway during rush hour. That was the most uncomfortable situation I have been in. It was sooo crowded it was unreal. Overall the day was nice

Farley- Yesterday was so busy!! We went to Starbuck's first, and I decided it would be a good idea to try a green tea latte. Don't. It tastes like creamed seaweed. After, we went to the Capital Museum which was pretty cool, mostly just pottery and artifacts. Later, since there are no traffic right-of-way laws, I almost got hit by a bus in front of the Forbidden City. The Forbidden City was amazing, definitely a must-see if you ever come to Beijing. Riding the subway back to school was not so amazing though, the cars are so full that you can't even move. After we left school, my host family took me to a bakery and a fruit store which were very interesting and authentic. I think I was the only non-Chinese person on the streets though which was a weird feeling. We had a good day, slightly overwhelming, but very interesting. I'm excited to see what the rest of the week will bring.

Eryn- Ok so yesterday was overall very eventful. the forbidden city was very long but was extremely beautiful. It looked like it came straight from the movie Mulan. The capital museum was 6 stories and took us about an hour to go through and it has a lot of old artifacts and history. it was interesting to see just how different their history was from ours. While i've been here i've experience a huge culture shock. I've eaten some interesting things that i would never have eaten in America. the traffic is horrible and no one has the right of way.everyone just rushes to the same spot no matter if they are walking or if they are driving. I eat dinner at my host family home every night and i eat breakfast every morning at the house also. China is very overwhelming overall but sightseeing is a lot of fun. Our group is bonding to extreme levels and we are having a ton of fun :)

Cameron- Yesterday we got to go the the Capital Museum and the Forbidden City. At the Capital Museum we learned about the about the history of China and the different dynasties. After the Capital Museum we had lunch at the school then went to the Forbidden City. I didn't expect the Forbidden City to be as big as it was but it was very cool to see where the emperor used to live. After the Forbidden City we had to take the subway, which was super crowded, to the school. Amanda was freaking out on the subway and Eryn and I were kinda laughing. Once we finally got off we went back to the school and we all went our separate ways with our host person. The whole experience is fantastic and we are bonding as a grow as well. Can't wait to see what else we have planned!

Dr. Boots-Marshall- Today our tour guide/teacher was Jill. We visited the Capital Museum, which is devoted to Chinese culture. So we saw exhibits that detailed China's political history (think thousands of years of Chinese dynasties) as well as China's social customs and traditions (like the marraige ceremony, the raising of children, types of clothing). In the afternoon, we visited the Forbidden City, which was home to the Ming and Qing dynasties. There were buildings for the Emperor's many wives, a place for him to change before he met his governers, a place for him to meet the governers, very small cubbicles for the servants. And every building was adorned with ornate scroll work, carved dragons, curly-q's, and Chinese characters -- all painted bright yellow, green, blue, and a little red. It was quite impressive. The food in the dorm continues to be fantastic. The chef learned that I love dumplings, so he made a HUGE pile of them as well as meat on a stick for Henry and me for dinner. Yum.

Finch- The Capital Museum was very interesting. But, as with most major museums, should not be tried to be tackled all in one day. There was so much to see and digest - history, artifacts, stories - it just couldn't be done in one trip! We went back to the school to eat lunch and then off to the Forbidden City. It is impossible to explain the scale of this palace of the emperor! It just goes on and on and on. Many of the pictures here are in panoramic view so you can try to get a sense of the size. One can only imagine what it might have been like with only the emperor's entourage there - not the multiple thousands that were present. The front of the complex, where the emperor often was, is set to present a very strong image while the back (where we entered) was "softer", landscaped areas, as that is where his wives were most of the time. It was also "Women's Day" in China and the People's Congress was meeting in Beijing (which made travel more difficult).

Day 2- Monday

Thoughts from Monday....

Check out pics at http://tinyurl.com/hhchina2011

Cameron- The classes here are one after the other and are very boring (taught in Chinese). But the kids here, or at least some of them, are very good at speaking english and are very nice. The food here is very good and plenty of it. There is no ending to the amount of food given to you until you say enough. I'm excited to figure out what we're doing the rest of the day and the rest of the week.

Eryn- Today we went through a typical school day and...it's boring (taught in Chinese). They stay in one classroom the entire day. The uniforms look comfy though haha. We've already experienced some interesting foods and textures. We haven't encountered a squatty potty yet hah we've been avoiding them. I've found out that I don't like hot water to drink or room temperature milk. I'm curious to see what we are doing the rest of the day.

Amanda- So far everything is nice. I've met some interesting people in my classes but their very nice. I had cabbage dumplings for the first time last night an they were really good. I'm excited to see what else is in store for us today.

Farley- Wow things are so different here!! We are definitely in the minority and we get stared at wherever we go. Everyone has been very nice but for some reason they laugh at me anytime I say ANYTHING. The food is good but very different than American Chinese food. So far I'm impressed with Beijing and I can't wait to go sightseeing and shopping!

Finch- The teachers are not being hosted at houses but in the attached dorm. It reminds me very much of the dorm I was in at college (not the dorms of today!). Being Mr. "meat and potatoes" for food, I've already had to stretch my culinary tastes. It's been good so far. The school itself is nice and reminds me of schools built in the 60's appearance-wise. The faculty and staff are all very nice. We had a meeting with the English teachers today and went to an "immersion" class for the teachers where they invited an American professor to come in and help them to understand the English language. It lasted about 50 minutes and they discussed an english novel. They do this about once a week. Took a tour of the school and exchanged money for tomorrow.

Dr. Boots-Marshall -- I woke up this morning thinking, "I don't feel at all jet-lagged! I must have already adjusted to the 14 hour time difference!" Well, that feeling has totally worn off. I'm terrifically sleepy but don't dare go to sleep until tonight, or I'll never get adjusted. We're going to do a little local exploring this evening. I really need a new book. I read an entire book on the plane (Stephen King's 'The Cell' -- really good!) and now I'm down to one. And since the TV isn't in English, books it is for entertainment!

Day 1

Today was the travel day to China. Everything went relatively well except for a 3 hour delay in Chicago to repair a mechanical problem with the plane.

The plane trip from Chicago to Beijing was 13.5 hours which is a L O N G trip.

Beijing is 14 hours ahead of Tulsa so we got here at 7:00pm Sunday. After getting our bags and meeting up with our hosts, we went to Beijing No.8 Middle School (about 30 minutes on the bus) to meet with the host families. Because it was late, everyone left quickly to get some food and some sleep before school starts in the morning.

More to follow as we learn about China....
