2nd Grade Fairytale Olympics 2012

The second graders combined their study of Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes with the activities mentioned in these stories when they participated in the Fairy Tale Olympics.

These Olympics featured four events from well-known Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes. The events were the Baa Baa Black Sheep Bag Relay, Paul Bunyun Rope Pull, Jack Be Nimble Candlestick Hurdle Relay, and The Cow Jumped Over the Moon Standing Long Jump.

This event was a combined effort of the Primary School Library and The Primary School P.E. Department. The idea was to show the connection between literature and movement. In these stories there is plenty of physical activity: tugging to get cinderella's slipper, the cow jumping over the moon, Jack being nimble enough to jump over the candlestick. The students become an active part of the story.

This gathering took place Friday, January 27th during the 2nd graders’ specials times. The students were assigned teams according to their P.E. class teams. These teams were given Fairy Tale/Nursery Rhyme names such as Snow White and the Dwarfs, Jack and the Giants, Goldilocks and Several Bears and Prince Charming and His Royal Court. The students rotated through each event twice and compared there own times or distances in each event.

The Flying Latke 2011

This last December, the third grade filmed The Flying Latke by Arthur Yorinks in the library. This is the story of a family celebrating Chanukah. After a family squabble which included a food fight, a latke is thrown into the air and it never comes down. When the latke is thought to be a UFO by the rest of the country, the families' response make this an amazingly funny story.

Each third grade class did their own version and we had a lot of fun putting them together. Due to size, the videos have been divided into three parts each.

Halloween in the Primary School Library

There was lots of Halloween activity in the library this October from preschool spiders races to first graders making pumpkins for the library pumpkin patch. The spider races came from a craft book in our library. The first graders made pumpkins from recycled water bottles. They stuffed the bottles with orange paper and designed unique jack-o'-lantern faces on their pumpkins.

Invasion of the Stub People by the 2nd Graders

Our second graders were introduced to the Horrible Harry series. Harry is a second grader who among his other interesting endeavors uses his imagination to create "stub people" from pieces of trash he finds in his classroom. Holland Hall second graders created their own such creatures and included special powers as well as the materials they might find in their classrooms to make their "stub people".
