Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo—or the fifth of May—commemorates the Mexican army's 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations. Cinco de Mayo traditions include parades, mariachi music performances and street festivals in cities and towns across Mexico and the United States.

Día del Niño at Holland Hall Primary School

El Día del Niño

Some facts:
  • El Día del Niño means “The Day of the Child” in English.
  • The general assembly of the United Nations recommended that beginning in 1956, all countries institute a universal Children’s Day. The objective was to reaffirm the universal rights of children.
  • Many Latin American countries celebrate “El Día del Niño” on different dates during Spring and Summer.
  • Some of the customs or activities that take place on “El Día del Niño” include going to the movies, children dressing up in costumes, and parading through the town.
  • Some cities in the United States, especially those that have large Hispanic populations, have “El Día del Niño” celebrations.

El Día del Niño at Holland Hall:
  • We will celebrate The Day of the Child on Monday, May 14 as one of our Spanish kindergarten through third grade class activities.
  • The celebration will take place during “Specials” class time, and it is for students only.
  • Kindergarten through third grade students are encouraged to wear the typical outfits of any country. All countries soccer jerseys are included. This is not a free dress day. Please contact me if you would like ideas on how to make an outfit with clothes you already own. ¡Muchas gracias!

Papel Picado

Papel picado ("perforated paper") is a decorative craft made out of paper cut into elaborate designs. Although it is a Mexican folk art, papel picado is used as a holiday decoration in many countries. (Wikipedia)
